Short Version:

Zelda in Japan is an upper-middle sized series for Nintendo, comparable to Kirby and Donkey Kong. However, it is simply overshadowed by its success in the west, where it is simply a tier higher on the totem pole.

I agree with everything you wrote.

I of course only mean "big" as a relative term. Many people consider franchises like Persona to be absolutely huge in Japan, but in reality, Zelda typically sells more, or at least on par. Like I suspected, it seems as if people only have this notion based on the fact that Zelda is huge in the west, so in comparison, the sales in Japan seem insignificant.

That's only because the recent trailer got a lot views (2+ million) and generated a lot of hype on the internet. People are being prisoners of the moment. Before that trailer not many people were making a case of Persona being huge in any market. It hasn't got the sales to prove it. Persona 4 Golden is best selling retail game with 0.87 million sold according to VGC. It's kind of similar to Xenoblade in that respect. A critically acclaimed game with decent sales, but many believe will do much better than their predeccesor and because of that lofty predictions are being made.
