Xenoblade is in-house because it's made by Monolith, who is owned by Nintendo and develops games exclusively for them. They were an independent studio, but because they were purchased, they are now 1st party.

Insomniac is an example of a 2nd party. 

When did that happen, I thought they got bought by Warner Brothers 10 years or so ago. Ahh ok you mean Monolith Soft.  My bad I never looked too closely at who was making the game.
