The Wii console needed a different shape. Different color. Don't care if it was purple or aquamarine and shaped like a pyramid. If you glance at the Wii U, it looks just like the black Wii they made towards the end of its life, complete with the little door in front of the console. SNES and NES were 2 completely different designs and it showed. You could tell instantly that it was not the NES. Nintendo needed to do that from day 1.
Its basic stuff. The PS2 never looked like the PS1. The PS3 never looked like the PS2. The PS4 never looked like the PS3. Same with Xbox and 360 and the X1. All of them look entirely different. Nintendo should have been the first ones to realize this.
