In DAI, it's stated by Solas and Abelas that the Dalish got a lot of the lore wrong. Abelas tells you that Tevinter didn't destroy Arlathan. The "Sentinel Elves" are the Elves old, they know what happened. The Dalish have gotten a lot of the lore wrong. The Vallasin that they take pride in, was actually the mark given to slaves by the Ancient Elves. The elves destroyed themselves. It's heavily implied that the Elven Gods were warring amongst themselves and that Solas sealed them away to protect his people from the fallout. It's also implied, by Corypheus, that the Maker was already gone and the Golden City was already corrupted when the Magisters physically breached the Fade. They essentially released the corruption that had been sealed away. The Maker and Elven Gods likely have some sort of connection.

Elves, regardless of what they might have been and the Dalish got wrong are still far more trustworthy than Solas. The liar bent the truth to help himself, cares little for other people, including the elves, and was trying to fix his mistakes. He can claim the tattoos are for that reason but who cares, it's a matter of what they mean now. He is left in the past and the world has moved on. You get the chance in game to convince Abelas of this, yet Solas takes none of it to heart.

Abelas bares the Vallasin of Mythal. They spent over a millenia guarding the temple. Whatever of you think of Solas it proves his statements on Vallasin true. All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if he is the next "big bad" in the DA universe. Speaking of Elven Gods,  Solas most likely isn't the only one either. He tells Abelas as much in the Temple of Mythal.
