I'm sorry, but that's just not true. You could equally argue that previous versions of these games were given a free pass because Sony was struggling and people felt sorry for them, but that position is equivalently unsupported by fact.
Innovation is not necessary for a game to be great but it certainly helps. Even if a sequel is a tweaked, fine-tuned, slightly better version of the first game in the series it will always struggle to have the same impact, regardless of the platform.
