If Blu-Ray and HD-DVD turn out like DVD and CD did then in a couple of years 1/4 to 1/2 of new movies will not play in your first generation HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. If you're lucky you'll be able to get a firmware update but many people will not be this lucky.
