Looks like a manufacturing fault for BluRay discs for this particular movie. Didn't actually know this could (and has) happened to discs in the past (never had one myself).

As the first article said, more publicity that Sony could do without...

If you have ever seen disc rot, that's exactly what happens.  I've seen it with laser discs in the past.  It's unlikely it's a problem with the format as much as a problem with the production of that particular movie though (before everyone jumps on the "blame Blu-Ray" train.  Still, it's never fun to have disc rot.

That sucks. What I hate about all media is how it is always prone to failure...

Disc technology failure - rot, scratches, broken in half, smallest particle of dust
Hard drives failure - just stop spinning, magnetism problems, corruption

It just sucks with that disc, because the guy took care of the disc well, and then blam, it rots from the inside. I'm sure it was just a factory problem.

as much as i hate blu-ray.

this is jsut a few incidents and a few movies. SO it is most likely production for that movie.

If all movies or 80% of movies start getting rot then i would be concerned.

this happens all the time, its happened on HD-DVD and regular DVD too. It happens when DVDs weren't made right in production, just a bad batch. It wont be widescale at all.

This is very similar to the old "Special edition" blue discs for ps2 games.  As if the PS2 needed outside sources to help it become corrupt.  They ruined you PS2, it would no longer read discs. 

 

This is just yet another reason some things you should wait before putting money into. I realize it was no neccesarily the bluray players fault, but more time gives bluray DVD makers, (such as sony) and third party movie produces to work out all kinks.



A delayed game is good someday, a bad game is bad forever.

Manufacturing defects as well as future disc incompatibility is just a few of the joys of being an early adopter to a disc format ...

If Blu-Ray and HD-DVD turn out like DVD and CD did then in a couple of years 1/4 to 1/2 of new movies will not play in your first generation HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player. If you're lucky you'll be able to get a firmware update but many people will not be this lucky.
