In the past 3rd parties used metacritic to determine if they should lay off a large set of developers or not. Many times it would also affect developer pay. This admittedly is a negative affect of metacritic on the video game industry. That said... Nintendo doesn't do that and their games are of a higher quality than most of the competition. Using metacritic to hammer that point home is a much more acceptable use - and those articles that say otherwise are totally missing the nuance and are being kind of immature about it in my opinion.
