I think we can all agree that Four Swords Adventures doesn't really count as a home console 2D Zelda game. Especially with all the accessories needed to play the damn thing.

You raise a fair point. I guess we can use Majora's Mask as a guinea pig, considering it's the worst selling 3D Zelda on the same handheld as ALBW, so we can compare its sales to that. Then we just need a real 2D Zelda on a home console, but I don't really think that's going to happen soon.
It's probably more safe to say that home console Zeldas sell better than handheld Zeldas. It just so happens that 3D and 2D are typically exclusive to those platforms. At least until the 3DS launched, that is.
