You're right, success is never a given but they certainly have a rabid following and the business sense to support such a piece of hardware;
Beyond that, you're looking at their marketshare compared to windows in the same way that many others do and it's not as clear cut as that. Windows doesn't sell PCs it's just an Operating system which is supported by many hardware manufacturers. Apple makes their own OS AND their own hardware. I'm willing to bet they sell more PCs than any other single hardware manufacturer; Since no one else can use the OS though, it'd also make sense why they only own a small portion of the market. Windows is to Mac as Android is to iPhone. SteamBox would be the same thing vs an Apple Console. It's always all these companies on an open platform, vs one company on a closed platform.
