Where's the misinformation again? As the name suggest, it's a theory (like the catchphrase of GT makes it clear). Some people just consider it as official in their heads because they find it cooler than the actual plot.
It's like the Squall is Dead or Rinoa = Ultimecia theories (only these were made to give some sense to FFVIII's plot)
