Nintendo - Wii U or new 3DS? - View Post

So I decided recently that I would probably be trading my Vita in for a 3DS (please don't make this a pro or anti Vita thread).  But then I got to thinking that maybe a Wii U would be better - I only play my Vita at home, and the Wii U has the second screen that I can play anywhere in the house (I think?) and I'm normally more of a console gamer.  I also really like the gamepad.  Here are pros and cons I came up with, please add more if you can think of them, plus any and all opinions.

Oh, also, how does the Wii U hook up to the TV?  HDMI or component?

I should note that I currently have a PS4 and XOne, though I really haven't used the One at all (but I'm afraid to trade it back in).

New 3DS - PROS

  • Huge userbase, likely to get more support going forward
  • More RPGs - would like to play Bravely Default and Fire Emblem
  • Xenoblade 3D coming soon
New 3DS - CONS
  • Other than Xenoblade 3D, not a lot of other games looking forward too
  • Not in love with the system itself
Wii U - PROS
  • Like the system design, especially gamepad
  • Xenoblade X coming soon
  • Could play original Xenoblade via Wii emulator (correct?)
  • Possibly Baynoetta 2 if it isn't too anti-God (would love to hear opinions on this)
  • Have a 4 year old and 2 year old that may like Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart?
Wii U - CONS
  • Worried about support after this year, or replacement soon
  • No Bravely Default, Fire Emblem
  • Cost
Thanks for any feedback!

I have both the Wii U and 3DS.

Your pros are quite good for both systems. I don't think there is too much to worry about with support for the Wii U after this year, but that's a toss of a coin for any system really, but it does already have a very good library. I am going to point out that it isn't a Wii emulator. It is a duel boot system, kind of like with your PC running windows and Linux. Although instead of a boot loader to choose your OS you can switch to either on the fly from within each OS. But yes, it can run any Wii game so that exponentially increases the library for the system. It's quite similar with the 3DS being backwards compatible with the DS though.

For the kids, certainly the Wii U, no contest.

The gamepad can be used within roughly 25-30 feet of your console as long as there isn't too much interference.

I myself was worried about Bayo being anti God, but I really didn't find it to be. Despite many of the enemies being called angels that's about where it ends and the story doesn't have that much to do with either or anyway.

Personally in your position I would likely go for a Wii U, but I play mine far more than my 3DS. There are lots of good classic rpg's available on both the Wii U and Wii virtual consoles.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.
