Bet Microsoft really is kicking themselves for not just buying them outright back then, lol. Hell, even Nintendo could've bought them outright back then. 

Microsoft bought part of Apple to keep them from going under so that they wouldn't be classed as having an OS monopoly and face being broken up.  If they had bought Apple they would have been broken up as a monopoly which would of defeated the purpose of buying Apple anyway.

I think MS' lawyers would've gotten them out of that anyway, but yeah they basically gifted Apple some money at the time for appearances sake.
