Sorry but the whole premise of this thread is just stupid, lol :D

No one in their right minds would consider the Vita a device targeted at 'casuals': They don't buy a rather expensive dedicated gaming device just because it has a touch screen. Their smartphones already have that, obviously.
Hell, *every* mobile screen is a touch screen these days because it's really useful, and releasing any mobile device with a screen that doesn't have a touch-interface would be incredibly backwards.
So clearly it's not a matter of 'pandering to casuals', a touch screen is simply a matter of practicality and usability.

The Vita has always been clearly marketed as a dedicated gaming device for the gaming enthusiast and nothing else.
I mean just consider the 1st party games that were released. Uncharted, Killzone, Tearaway, Gravity Rush etc. They're hardly Candy Crush are they?
Much emphasis was made in their marketing on the dual analog sticks too, and how much effort they've put into making them feel just right.

Actually I'm pretty convinced that an important factor to go with expensive proprietary memory cards was Sony's realisation that this is a niche device targeted at gaming enthusiasts that really want a powerful portable console, even if it means putting down the extra money for silly expensive memory cards.
(This I think was a mistake though, because of the backlash it got for that; it was a step too far towards total 'core' enthusiasts and away from general accessibility)
