Why did Sony choose to target the casual market instead of the core gamer with the PlayStation Vita?

No casual gamer wants to buy such an exepensive device just for gaming. A smartphone can play games and do so much more than a Vita.

I always thought it would have been smart of Sony to base the PSVita off of Android and do something similar to what Amazon does with its Kindle line. Add apps and put pure touchscreen games as well as create games strictly for it.

They should have done that but Sony hasn't been very innovative in the past few years. They are always trying to catch up instead of trying to develop brand new things like they used to many years ago.
