For those starting I would suggest to play as good on normal difficulty first. Good is harder than evil because evil is pure destruction. Playing as good if fun and having your first run-through as good gets a good feel of the game with a standard ending.
Then your second playthrough should be evil on the hardest difficulty, evil is a lot more fun and the destruction of everything actually makes hardest quite easy and I fear going evil first then good might make things boring after having the epic level of evil. Also the evil ending is fantastic!
