Both personality and the games being played role in viewership size. I've discovered dozens of games that I never knew about because the Game Grumps played them at some point, and I've also discovered a number of the Youtube channels that I'm subscribed to because they made a video about a game I like, which has in turn led me to discover more games I never knew about through those channels.
Blame the developers of those games for not making them better instead of blaming the gameplay for showing you that the games are bad.
