Based on Nintendo's track record, they'll probably go cheap with the external anyway. N3DS is launching in NA and EU next month and only includes a 4GB SD, which what, only costs like 60 cents to make? Also, we really can't know if they'll go full digital. It would be such a huge shift.

Nintendo's track record isn't relevant, since being digital wasn't mandatory. 4GB was acceptable because they could assume that you were only buying retail games, which mean that the memory card would only be used for save data and maybe some indie/VC games. It's an entirely different ball game when you're entire userbase can only play games digitally, and they don't have do factor a cart slot into manufacturing cost. (though I'm not sure how much the latter factors into that) They need to provide more space because everyone will need that space just to play their games at all.

I think people overestimate how big the leap actually is. We are already in an all digital world, and their major competitors, the mobile market, has already reaped the benefits of an all digital ecosystem.
