The final gamepad design is pretty ergonomic, remember that when announced the gamepad was leaning towards the tablet side rather than ergonomics.

They should not have gone with either. The gamepad is erganomic in spite of it's shape. It's as comfortable as a tablet shaped controller reasonably could be, but it's not as comfortable as a controller with a screen in general reasonably can be. Far from it.
The amount of people that would have complained that it didn't feel like a pro controller if it was specifically made to feel as comfortable as and be shaped like a pro controller would be practically none existant.
