No doubt it's different now. When people think of "app," they think of Candy Crush and Angry Birds (lol whatever happened to that series anyway?) instead of video games or software. It's actually an annoying phrase because now (or back then) people used it for EVERYTHING, even food, cars, etc. etc. instead of just software.
