My girlfriend actually perfers it to the gamecube controller... and yes she used to play the gamecube version with me... though not extensivly.
My guess is it works just as well for anyone who hasn't played the previous brawls.
Nice at all the various stereotyping of Rocketpigs neice too...
Rocket's going to know her better then you, it's possible for girls, even little kid girls to perfer a "real" game.
