After their success with the N64 and Gamecube, I think there were people within Factor 5 who thought that they could achieve excellent sales by pushing the envelope of what the PS3 could do. From what I hear, a lot of the problems with Lair are associated with performance issues and bugs which could be blamed on the development team overestimating the capabilities of the PS3 and then spending way too much time optimizing the code and ignoring the growing bug list.
