Dude... Anita had nothing to do with the sex scandal, it was Zoey Quinn. She is reason Gamergate started because her boyfriend ratted her out to the world after she cheated on him with a writer from Kotaku. The rumor that caused Gamergate was because of the rumor that she was giving sex for good reviews for her game. This was debunked (which pretty much knocked the legs out from under Gamergate) and caused a media shitstorm when people attacked Anita Sarkeesian for speaking out against Misogyny in gaming. Zoey Quinn did recieve a lot of misogynist statements from people and it caused a hail of crazed press until the mainstream media took notice. Kotaku investigated the situation and confirmed that he was never reviewing her game to begin with, she just felt like cheating, which was on her. The statements that were thrown her way were quite misogyist.

Zoey's boyfriend ended up starting a shitstorm to get back at his ex and because Anita spoke out against the sexism she became a threat to the status quo outside of criticizing games.

The sex scandal opened the door for a lot of shady shit that Anita, friends(reviewers) and her clients(she is a publicist for certain indy devs) had been doing. Rigging indy game awards(ones you had to pay to enter), friends giving perfect scores for friends games and so on. You are correct in Zoe not having relations with the person who reviewed her at that site and Zoe was out of the gamergate picture within 2 weeks of its inception. The whole gamergate thing opened to an anti corruption in journalism issue. Anita, doing what publicists do, deflected the real issue(corruption) with a made up one(mysogany) that put her at the forefront of the headlines. Multiple gaming sites came out in support of killing the "gamer" the mysoganistic, rape fantasizing, slut shaming person that she portrayed gamers as. This whole time gamergate was calling out these same websites for an array of poor journalism practices. Their response, staying the course was to stick with the story that people were mad that their sites supported Anita and Zoe over the facist opressive manosphere that wanted more rape fantasy games, rather than respond to accusations of corruption. This whole time Anita was taking in the free publicity, growing her brand(and earnings), which is the reason I believe she is involved in "feminism." I would be shocked if she gives a shit about any of the topics she talks about, unless they effect her earnings.

Anita Sarkeesian went to school focusing on two degrees revolving around social relations. I believe her thesis was on female character tropes in pop culture. This is a quick response and i'll get the specifics in a little bit.
