It should technically be possible, but there are licensing issues.

I'm sometimes using Plex to stream from PC to Wii U (in the browser).

It natively supports x264 because I can stream 1080p MP4 files without stressing the Plex app on PC. The CPU usage goes to 2-3% with some files that use an audio codec that the Wii U doesn't support natively (like DTS).

I can also stream 4K files, but is stresses the PC CPU by 30-40% because it has to convert it to 1080p.

Didn't know Plex.. and nice info.. (did knew about streaming and also did it with mp4 on wii)

And yes Bunchanumbers.. If Nintendo can't or wanna.. I would love VLC did it (offcourse expecten them to include upad.. (but i think they would.. can't be that long before all smart tv has "screen remotes" and they could use the codes and knowhow later)

And if VLC or other 3 part did it.. would it cost them more than the software.. ?

(Do theese media player "makers" pay every time they comes onto a new platform)

I don't know why a open source media player isn't on the eShop... Maybe legal issues.

It would get one very quickly if it was hacked, probably even with USB, DVD and Blu-ray playback.

Yes..it could be some about this.. opensouce and the rights/codecs they can get.. but again.. do that legal keep them away from WiiU.. it make some sense.. but VLC is on samsung tv's and app store. ?

Could also be a Nintendo thing.. (some thing about them not alowing opensouce) But that does not totally make sense either.. (And I think they atlest has power to alow it if they choosed)

Yes if WiiU gets "jailbraiket" this will be one of the first things they will do.. thats for sure :)
