One of the focusses of the Wii was being affordable; the ability  to do HD would have meant a beefier GPU and a higher price tag.

for the 3 years it was highly saught after they couldn't ship enough to meet demand. a higer price tag wouldn't have shifted demand too much at all and the console might have flourised a lot longer and with better 3rd party support. it was def their achiles heal. 

You don't know that. Real demand curves usually aren't linear. A higher price-point could very well make people's willingness to pay much less.
