Never played a lot of the first 3 games, but I have a few issues with each one.

Smash 64 felt a bit primitive in every way.
Melee was very tough to pick up and the character roster was unbalanced.
Brawl had tripping (and other stuff but tripping omg).

I don't have a particular issue with Smash Wii U thinking about it (maybe air dodging, but even then I'm not so sure about that), and it's by far the one I played the most, so that would be my favorite. But I have to say, watching competitive Melee is awesome.

Edit: oh and of course, Smash Wii U gets some bonus points for having the most complete and awesome character roster ever.

Melee not balanced? are you kidding me? newer variations of Smash have way over powered smash attacks

Melee is great because the game is technically sound. in terms of competition play nothing matches it. I mean for gods sake in Brawl you could slip and fall randomly.... ..
