I never get why Metroid is considered one of Nintendo's Big 3 when its sales hardly even pass the 2M mark. The Big 3 term was all the rage in the Wii era of 2007

Big three was never about sales. It was about the top of the line quality titles that Nintendo fans should expect. Metroid (at that point) didn't really have any bad games in its series, much like Zelda and Mario. It might even come from the NES era when Zelda was the vast open world game, Mario the 1D game (can only go in one direction), and Metroid the vast 2D large world game with platforming, action, and adenture mechanics. Then in the SNES era the top Nintendo games were Zelda, Mario, and Metroid again. Arguably, Donkey Kong should be added as well, but the GC era didn't really get a real Donkey Kong game so when the term "big three" was coined Donkey Kong wasn't on the radar. But yeah, big three was never (at least solely) about sales.
