You are unable to progress in the basement until chapter 4 of the game, so you simply missed the room where you could make progress. One possibility is that you overlooked the key on a pillar in the room with the crystal ball that doesn't necessitate catching any ghosts and the room is still unlit; that's why it's easy to overlook. |
That explains it. I don't know what chapter I was on, though. And I don't remember whether or not I saved. At this point I'll probably just wind up restarting the game next time I play it, anyway. It's been a really long time. Thanks.
