Ditching the 3D wouldn't do much to provide better hardware (i'd be surprised if the feature is responsible for anything more than a small fraction of the 3DS's cost), but it would certainly result in much better looking games. Not needing to optimize around the 3D setting would free up a lot of resources. As someone who hates the 3D setting, that would make me happy :p
