An "official" site is controlled. It only has the info they want you to know, as opposed to a news site that will have literally everything there is to know about the game. Every trailer. Every gameplay video. Every interview. Every tweet. Every analysis. Gameplay impressions. Resolution. Framerate. Translations. Discussions. Etc.

But most websites only have information beyond what the official one has POST release. Until then, they get their info FROM the official website (or youtube, which is also embedded on the website). The official website does lose some significance AFTER the game is released, but you could just go get the game from the store after the release. Not the case with Xenoblade Chronicles X.
