I suggest you look up the cut scenes of the first game. Ascension was a side story, not apart of the main trilogy.

Yeah, I've heard the first game's story is actually quite good and Kratos is somewhat likeable in that game, but after that, he seems entirely immature and unwilling to take responsibility for his own actions. I don't know, maybe it's different for people who've played the games, but I can't stand his character.

Its not that he doesn't take responsibility for his own actions, he doesn't care about the consequences as long as he gets his revenge. The only redeeming factor in the third game was brought about by hope in the third game whom he saved by opening up Pandoras box. After the first game whatever remorse kratos had ceased to exist because of the betrayl of came upon him once again in the same game after he took his brother Ares place as the God of War and was betrayed by Zeus. Zeus thought he was abusing his power and did away with him. He vowed to murder the gods for betraying him and finding out that he was another one of Zeuses bastard children did nothing to stop him.

The reason why hes called the Ghost of Sparta is because he goes mad after his wife and daughters death at his own hands (which he was tricked into doing by ares) and hes cursed to wear their ashes for the rest of his existence. I'll send you a video of the Saga cut scenes.
