How come Nintendo doesn't remodel their Consoles until after they're dead?

Nintendo consoles (especially recent ones) are usually pretty small and compact so I don't really think there is much demand for a Slim version. I think a slightly redesigned Wii U GamePad would be a good idea though, more compact and ergonomic.
