At least that had precedent though. Both the PS1, and PS2 required memory cards for save files. And the same can be said for the N64 and GC. 

Yea but the prices of the vita memory cards weren't exactly cheap during launch. And not to mention, the times were changing since ps3/360/3ds all had storage of somekind. And not to mention, from what I hear, even phones are starting to do that as well
