Because the numbers are broken up by generations and the Gameboy lasted two generations. The choice was either to do it the way the OP did it or to add all Gameboy sales to the SNES total while leaving the N64 without a handheld to accompany it; the latter makes less sense.

Gameboy launched in 1989, Pokemon released in 1996, and Gameboy Advance in 2001. Pokemon is a nice middle point and is what caused Gameboy to become a two-gen handheld.
