I've only played 3U on both platforms, but I loved it. Funny enough, I really couldn't stand it at first. I only got it because I have a close friend that loves the series, and would always talk about the PSP entries. When I first tried it, I didn't like the slow pace, didn't like how long it took to fight monsters, or how they didn't have health bars, didn't like having a million things to do and no idea what to start with.
After a while though, it hooked me. Once I found a comfortable weapon, got the hang of what items to craft, and learned about online co-op (at least on the Wii U version), I would find myself playing for multiple hour sessions. Now I just can't get enough of all the content, and the pace of battles helps to keep me immersed. It's much more interesting watching a monster's movements to try to figure out the best way to attack it, or how much health it has left, as opposed to just staring at its health gage the whole time. And once I finally take down the monster, using the equipment I carefully combined or crafted from items obtained in previous quests, nothing feels more satisfying.
It definitely isn't a game for everyone, but I wouldn't write it off either. It takes a big time commitment, but if you can manage that, it's one of the most addicting games out there IMO.
