OP: Game journalism doesn't need to be saved, because for the most part it never existed. Expecting budding Edward R. Murrows and Walter Cronkites to come work for Polygon or Kotaku is not realistic. These are hobbyist publications, no different than Model Airplane Enthusiast or Cupcake Baking Monthly.
The only publication I ever thought was worthy of paying for a subscription to was Nintendo Power, which was essentially a 100-page ad for Nintendo published by Nintendo. Why did I like it? Because it consisted of game maps and other fun stuff instead of reviews and reveals for games that, for the most part, I couldn't care less about.
