Amiibos - Are they worth buying beyond collection purposes?

The functionality is so limited and unappealing that it makes the toy element virtually the only redeeming factor. I know a person who bought an amiibo primarily to test its function and ended up tossing it in the back room...

I hope future games make them worth it.
