I don't have any evidecence to suggest the actual handled market won't shrink anymore. I honesly don't know. Still I think the potential market for traditional handled consoles is larger than the actual market, because 3DS and PsVita are simply weak consoles.

I think the next generation should give an answer to that, especially if nintendo is planning a nintendo fusion kind of thing.

The Vita is pretty strong for a handheld though, but it does lack mainstream games.

I mean weak in terms of market proposition, not in terms of hardware power. PsVita is weak beacuse it was designed to be the console of poor-mans ports of Ps3 games, it's not portable, it was expansive. (now it's not expansive anymore but it doesn't matter since it doesn't have any kind of support).

3DS likewise was designed to render the handled game experience more complex and similar to home console gaming, as opposed to the DS which was designed to be very accesible. It's more expansive and less portable compared to its predecessor (so expansive it needed a huge price cut in its first year). 3DS still manages to sell adeguately becase it's still supported by Nintendo games. The software sold on 3DS is a success but 3DS as a console is a failure.
