Personally I think Retro did a perfect job on the atmosphere on Prime, if ever they've derailed a bit with Prime 2 and Prime 3. And no I wouldn't like a 3rd person metroid, I'd prefer 1st person or side-scrolling.
Retro could do a lot of thing, my top priorities are a Metroid game or a new IP (for instance I'd like something on the vein of Resident Evil 4).
