Sorry but You haven't thought this through very well.

They didn't try very hard at all. Wii U was a horrible attempt at getting 3rd party support on board (its name, its marketing, its specs) Literally there is no aspect of the console that was designed with 3rd parties in mind. Slightly besting 7 year old hardware with even more awkward achitecture is not in anyway appealing to 3rd parties. Failing to support said system yourself for the first 9months is also a brilliant way of getting 3rd parties on board. NOT :p
Even if Nintendo was to simply make games for their core audience they could still very easily do it whilst matching sony and microsofts next consoles (not 1:1 but near enough-think PS2 vs Gamecube) and selling it for a profit.
