They were supposed to do that during the original Xbox days. Not sure why they didn't pull through. They had plans to buy both 
Sega AND Nintendo. Why they didn't, I will never know.

Nintendo didn't want to, can't do a hostile take over in Japan (not worth it at the best of times wherever anyway).

I'm sure Square would be a relatively easy purchase tho if MS wanted it.
