Real-time strategy. You're like an astronaut and there's three of you stranded on an alien planet. You need to collect fruit to survive each day cycle. You use creatures called pikmin to defeat enemies and carry fruit back to your ship. You ingest food each day, so be sure not to run out. The game saves all of your progress from the previous day and there isn't a limit to the number of days you can play, so it's good to go at your own pace. You multitask between the three astronauts on most levels, and defeat bosses and the like. It can be a little overwhelming for newcomers (Pikmin 3 was my first experience with it) but it's really satisfying and a lovely, charming game overall.
Plus, the multiplayer is really amazing and it makes good use of the gamepad (map or touch controls) as well as the motion controls of the wiimote (both are optional though).
