Yeah, Apple failed once. But the company was small like fuck compared to now and also didn't have any hype factor. It was the hipster thing back then (which was part of what led to world domination some years later, but anyway).

If Apple released a console today and threw some money at it, there would be no stopping them. That thing could have mid-range hardware and still sell for 999 € because it's made out of metal or something. People would be lining up like crazy, I kid you not. I also once doubted them but time showed that they can get away with ANYTHING! Seriously, they don't even have to try anymore. They can sell a friggin' cell phone for 1000 € and sell more of that sucker than Samsung sells of some 99 € Android phone! 

And now here I am and own an iPhone myself. Resistance is futile.

If Apple bought bungie like bungie wanted...it would've solidified their entrance into the gaming realm. Microsoft screwed that up for them once they took Halo from them. 

As for a new contender, I would say Samsung since they are the new Sony, but of the Korean variety. They are runnig the show no different than Sony was in the 90's and early 2000's before they lost touch.

Well, imagine Apple buying T2 with Rockstar, relasing GTA 6 exclusive for dat apple console and BOOM! 

Sure EA failed with buying T2, but EA is small fish compared to Apple. Really really small. All the money EA could gather from banks and stocks and such is just pocket change for Apple.

But to get a little serious, I don't think it will happen. Apple has no interested in the gaming market because the margins are just too low. They want to make real money and don't enter a market without a good reason. But if they would enter the market with a console, I'm pretty sure they would wipe the floor with the competition.
