FFXIII might still launch in december in Japan though
Sony might put the pressure on Square, and Square might understand it actually

Wait a minute -- why would Square want to improve the PS3's situation? They've been publically complaining that Sony messed up and that they need to market it better, drop the price, etc. It's already very cheap in Japan -- it's just selling 8.5k/week despite the low price.

If anything, the lack-luster performance of the PS3 will make FF13 a lower priority for Square-Enix, who could make more money targetting popular platforms in Japan.

I don't understand your reasoning. You act as though Square and Sony are currently close friends who want to help each other out. They're two companies who have been able to help each other profit wildly in the past, but that doesn't look like the current situation. This is all about business.

The PS3 is not very cheap in Japan.  If Sony came out with a PS3 that played PS2 games for $250 in Japan, we can talk about it being very cheap.  Being the most expensive system in Japan, that uses the most power, and has the most expensive games while not playing the games from the previous generation doesn't make a system very cheap.

Sony owns around 5% of Square so maybe that has something to do with it.  Also, maybe Square remembers the days when Nintendo dominated console sales in Japan and doesn't want those days to return.
