I agree with curl-6 on this; there aren't just "dark/mature" and "non-dark/non-mature" games. There are specific reasons why things like Bayonetta 2 or ZombiU aren't big sellers (though they're not doing badly); like curl-6 said, they're niche titles. Platinum have done similar games on Sony and Microsoft consoles and they generally haven't sold that much there, either. Those kind of games are very stylised and, sad as it is, the biggest selling games aren't usually that eccentric.
As for something like CoD, I think there's too much brand association with Xbox and PlayStation. Most of the people who care about something like CoD already have it for another console. Same probably goes for the FPS genre in general; people would already be buying XO or PS4 if they want shooters.
If Nintendo put Retro on something to fill a similar kind of category to a Zelda or AssCreed, though - something which is perceived as "mature" by the half-witted mass market that cares deeply about such things, while still being reasonably classic in its artistic direction - then it could be a big seller.
