The best thing Nintendo can do is make a console that has better hardware than both the ps4 and xbox one. And release it in the middle of ps4 and xo's lifespan. Nintendo has always been behind in terms of hardware and have always believed firmly that it doesn't matter. When to a degree it does.

If they want to get back on top they need to get better third party support and better hardware, we'll see if that ever happens though. It definitely would be a surprise if it did.

That literally puts them in the same situation as Wii U. The middle of PS4/XB1 life is around 2016/2017, by then these consoles will have very large install bases and the fanbases for all the major 3rd party franchises will be firmly established on these devices. By the time this Nintendo console releases we could easily be looking at 70-100 million PS4/XB1 owners and big games like Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, FIFA, Madden, NBA 2K, Destiny, Watch Dogs, Batman, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, The Witcher, Evolve, The Crew, Battlefield, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls already having their core fanbases established.

People who bought a PS4/XB1 in 2013-2016 aren't going to upgrade to a slightly more powerful Nintendo console since they will still be happy with them and receiving a ton of new games. Also the majority of people who are looking for a new console in 2017 onward will likely choose PS4/XB1 because they will have 100's of games to choose from, probably be cheaper and have big online communities so they can play these 3rd party titles online with friends.

So this console may recieve initial 3rd party support, but sales will still likely be low because these games fanbases are already on other devices so 3rd parties will start to scale back on the number of releases and it will be underpowered again in a few short years when PS5/XB4 release thus making it a console to play exclusives on just like Wii U.
