In the videogame industry? For videogames? Yes. Link beats them all. Just look at how Nintendo games sell vs Disney games.

Also, wasn't there some survey in the 90's which showed that Mario was more recognizable to American kids than Mickey Mouse?

I don't expect that to have changed really, especially after the succes of Wii and DS.
