This was from youre wikipedia reference:

"A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet.[1] MMOs usually have at least one persistent world, however some games differ. These games can be found for most network-capable platforms, including the personal computer, video game console, or smartphones and other mobile devices.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres."

I think you'll agree that nothing in there excludes Destiny as an MMO, and, to it's credit, it has a structure more in line with classic MMOs (public events, spaces, etc.). Those are noticably absent in Forza, Halo, and CoD (I've never really played Minecraft, so I would be out of line to speak about it.).

With regards to a persistent world, your second reference takes care of that, by saying, "Many games have at least one persistent world, however others just have large numbers of players competing at once in one form or another without any lasting effect to the world at all."

Bottom line: it's a fairly fluid and expansive definition that encompasses Destiny. Destiny may not be structured as much like WoW or other commonly accepted "MMOs," but it has all the requisite elements, as per the aforementioned definitions. The other games you mentioned lack several of the key elements, so I could see where they depart quite easily. Most of them have some form or another of MP function, fully encompassed by one feature of Destiny (The Crucible). Where they leave off, however, Destiny keeps on going and going.

Sorry but I disageee with the fact that Destiny have more to offer other than "public events" which is actually still in a 16 player session/game and not "open world" in any way. If Destiny is an MMO then COD, Halo and the majority of FPS are too. You may feel like this is public and open but it is just NOT.

But let's call those games MMOs: Then I do not see why Destiny should be "cocaine" compared to other "MMO FPS" out there.
