That article doesn't make a lot of sense. We are entering 2015 with just about all major third party support cancelled for wii u. This year the wii u will be even more a niche format and not get any of the impressive, state of the art games that ps4 or xbone get or the weaker ps3 and 360 versions.

Both ps3 and 360 are still more relevant and in mainland Europe the ps3 is still outselling wii u most of the time despite the huge existing ps3 userbase.

Nintendo are stuck with the wrong product which they must support for a few more years yet.

I don't see the appeal of have yet another GD console to play the same games. We've already got pc, xbox, and playstation, and now steam box. And you peeps want another console playing the same games? I buy one console to play cross platform games and then I buy others for the exclusives and wiiu is by far the best system for exclusives.

How will that work for Nintendo though? It's highly unlikely the wii u will ever be profitable. At the moment monies generated from 3DS is probably subsidising wii u. Surely they need a console that can compete with the competition. There is absolutely no reason why Nintendo can't have a powerful console of the same type as ps4 and xbone and not only sell their brilliant exclusive games but benefit from third party support and royalties too.

Alternatively perhaps they should go the other route and compete in the micro console sector producing budget price consoles capable of delivering enough performance for their type of games. This would fit well with their children/parent mainstream market. The wii u is basically along those lines if they had kept to a simple top loading design and a traditional joypad.  The slot loading mechanism and gamepad screen has added to costs. However its difficult for Nintendo to impress with their games if the hardware is weak.
