I think most people would have to agree that the PS4 is 18.5m (at least) right now with another week to go. I've always thought 19.5m myself but still think 20m isn't insane. It's just incrdible how that 'potential' number has inreased and how the 'crazy predictions' have decreased. |
It must be said that 15-17M predictions were common when XBOne still was so weak and MS clueless about how to compete at the beginning of this gen that Sony could have quietly dominated maximising profit too, without having to make price drops or too many special offers and bundles and the situation could have even allowed it to avoid boosting production until its costs had the first major reductions. But Sony domination forced MS to compete more aggressively, and this in return made Sony make more offers and bundles and increase production. To cut it short, competition increased and this benefited both PS and XB gamers.
BTW, it's quite likely that except in November, Sony will keep a large lead, but MS most reasonable goals were probably just to close at least part of the gap in USA and UK, to have an excellent November and a very good December and to boost the baseline above the previous appalling one, and it had to bite the bullet about the high probability, that actually became reality, that Sony countered its moves to boost PS4 too and keep its lead as unaffected as possible without bleeding money. Results are really excellent, well played, Sony.
